Judging the Tokyo AI Film Festival
Big news to announce for today, I will be serving as a member of the jury for the Tokyo AI Film Festival. Deeply honored by this, and I'm excited to see not just where the medium is heading, but what these creators are doing in this new frontier.
In general, I'm honored to sit on a panel with the best in the business. I'm judging alongside Inoue Hiroaki, co-founder and former vice president of Gainax, the studio behind some of the most influential anime ever made, plus directors, writers, and creative leaders from around the world. A number of them I've worked on projects with, and consider friends as well.
That mix says something about what is happening here: AI filmmaking is bringing in both traditional and experimental creatives, from all over the world. It is a global conversation, and on August 2, Tokyo is hosting it.
The entry ticket
Here is what I keep telling my teams and colleagues in this space, and what I will be looking for as a judge: it is always about the final product. We all love a good demo, but what do people want to see, and what is something that sticks with you after the final credits roll. Every image is suddenly possible, which means the images themselves stop being the differentiator. This is a serious positive, as now creativity isn't walled off by who has the most resources, but by who has the most creative ability. Story, taste, and the choices a filmmaker makes. That's the game.
